Strange news indeed!
I read on the news this morning that:
1. Lower-income households in Singapore were not as badly hit by inflation as those in the middle and higher-income groups in the second half of last year.
2. The inflation rate for general households from July-December 2007 last year was 3.4 per cent, and for the whole year, it was 2.1 per cent, compared with 1 per cent a year go.
3. For the second half year, the consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.8 per cent for the lowest 20 per cent income households and 3.3 per cent for the middle 60 per cent income group.
Do you believe what was written? I do not. How then do they explain the 30-40% increases at my nearby coffeshop in coffee/tea/chicken rice/prawn noodles/chai peng? I know of someone who got "interviewed" for these sort of surveys. In the survey, he/she was asked what was typically eaten everyday and when he/she answered chicken rice, it came to light that the prices stated in the survey booklet was $1.80!
Seriously. With such "retro" prices, how can we expect such CPI surveys to truthfully portray what's happening today.
I don't mind the price increases as inflation is widespread in the world today. However, increases in local transportation costs irks me. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind paying for an efficient train/bus system, hey I willingly forked US$10 for a train ride in San Francisco. It was peak hour and trains arrived every 2-3 mins with enough space for everyone. In Singapore? Forget about getting on the first train that you see!
Don't get me wrong. I love Singapore, just like I love Macintosh but not Apple. :-P

Sashimi - 刺身
![]()
On a reflective Good Friday, we made a trip to our local Sakuraya outlet. Using the excuse of replacing our Cha Soba stock, we decided to have our breakfast there as well. :-) Ordered a nice mix of (Sake) salmon, (Hotate) scallop and (Mekajiki) swordfish
sashimi, an Asari (clam) miso soup which is absolutely gorgeous and a small dose of California Maki to top it off.
Yummy...

Yet another increase...
When we read the news that oil prices jumped to yet another record high (near US$112 a barrel), we were expecting yet another increase in pump prices and we weren't "disappointed". The markets were hit by a string of bad news over the weekend, and with the US dollar sinking to an all-time low, petrol are now (before discount): The 92-octane grade is at $2.053 a litre, 95 at $2.086 and 98 at $2.16. Diesel is now at $1.613 a litre.

MacBook running VAGCOM
Today was our usual "car wash day" and we carried out an "experiment" with a MacBook and the VAGCOM cable. To cut the long story short, VAGCOM runs fine with the MacBook starting up into the Bootcamp partition which is installed with WinXP. And oh by the way, Garmin nRoute works with our GPSMAP 60CSx too. Hurray!!! :-D

First visit to Sepang
Last weekend, we visited the F1 circuit at Malaysia, Sepang for the first time to check out some tracking sessions organized by a local motoring club. It was fun and exciting to see so many nice (high performance) cars zooming around. There were the Skyline R35 GTRs, the Porsche GT3s and more. Despite the hot weather, we had our adrenalin rush while playing spectators to a whole range of spin-outs and close calls. We will post some pics in the gallery section soon. Do stay tuned. :-)
